Knot Symbolism in Celtic Engagement Rings

The Celts were the main inhabitants of Britain up until the Roman invasion, until they were marginalized and actively hunted by the invaders. The culture survived, despite the Rome’s best efforts, and indeed enjoyed a resurgence once the empire collapsed. Celtic engagement rings and jewelry in general build on this history, inferring it into their designs.
One of the signatures of the Celtic tradition is it’s jewelry. As far as we know, the Celtic civilization had no writing until after the 2nd century, so not much written record of them exist. The hardiness of their work with metal has enabled it to survive almost in isolation, giving us a glimpse into their world. The designs are bold, and symbolic of how the Celts viewed the world around them.
The knot is probably the best known design feature of Celtic jewelry. The first examples of knotwork appear around the 7th century and is believed to originate from Irish missionaries who traveled to Britain around that time. The missionaries brought their goods to trade and the knot was soon integrated into local culture and artwork.
Modern study of Celtic knots show a startling similarity between it and Egyptian work. Coptic and Celtic show many similarities in language and design, and a theory suggests a common foundation that split as each culture took its own way.
Many modern Celtic engagement ring designs reflect their Pagan roots. The knot signaled the arrival of Christianity, which came with the later Romans. Britain was slow to embrace the new religion and it was long after Rome fell that the island could be considered truly Christian.
The knot, used on Celtic engagement rings is believed to be the Celtic version of the cross. In many traditional knot designs, the cross was inserted somewhere within it. Either in space, or within the strands of the knot. The Triquetera knot, also called the Trinity knot, is the most well known. It is commonly featured in Celtic jewelry, and in Christian works this knot has been used as a reference to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Historians have rejected claims that knots also symbolize love, eternity, strength, courage and other positive notions due to lack of evidence. But, given the Celtic culture’s habit of using art to express such things, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility. There simply isn’t the evidence available to confirm or deny such anything.
Although we have mentioned Celtic engagement rings throughout this article, the Celts had no such thing. Their rings had many uses, and many meanings. As far as history tells us, engagement rings are very recent innovations. What we use as Celtic engagement rings were originally designed as gifts or symbols of courage, love and respect.
In the end, Celtic engagement rings can mean whatever you want them to mean. Which makes them unique in that you can take or leave the history of the culture as you see fit.

A Celtic knot tattoo is one of the most recognized body art. Its origins lay in the ancient history of the Celtic people and even if you are not affiliated with any clan, you may want to mark your body with such a notorious and beautiful tattoo.
First Appearances
The Celtic knot tattoo made its first appearance circa 450 AD. Because the Celts were not ones to have a written record, the meaning behind a Celtic knot tattoo is pretty vague. They have been a constant throughout history and many have tried to infer some basic significance regarding a Celtic knot tattoo.
The Celtic knot tattoo can be referred to as an endless knot or the mystical knot. This points to its meaning in a spiritual or esoteric sense as it can symbolize endings or beginnings. The Celtic knot tattoo is so appealing to us because it reminds us of our primordial self and our quest to understand the cycles of life in both the otherworldly realms and our physical self.
It is Not Just About the Mystical
Those that sport a Celtic knot tattoo don’t always assign a spiritual meaning to it. It can also refer to a life cycle that is never interrupted. It can also be used as a magical charm to ward off setbacks, sickness or anything else that can interfere with a happy and peaceful life. Celtic knots are not just found in body art, but in jewelry, home d?r and clothing as well.
In the past, when a person received a gift that was adorned with a Celtic knot, it meant that the gift giver was wishing the recipient a life of luck, longevity, and prosperity in any endeavor they may follow.
The Celtic Trinity Knot
The Celtic trinity knot is often referred to as the Triquetra. From the Latin, Triquetra means three cornered and is one of the most common of the Celtic knot tattoos. There are many interpretations when it comes to this ancient knot and not all agree on its true meaning.
The one thing all agree on is that it is based on a culmination of 3 parts. For Christians this often refers to the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost or Spirit. For those with a more Wiccan or pagan persuasion it can stand for three of the powers of the feminine; the Maiden, the Crone and the Mother. New age thinkers can assign it to mean spirit, body and mind.
All of these varied interpretations show us that the meaning of the Celtic knot tattoo is not something that is set solidly in stone. Without a written history, it leaves plenty of room for personal interpretations.
If you are seeking to ink a Celtic knot tattoo on your body, there are many meanings you may assign to this magical symbol for what is most important in your life and in your personal beliefs. No matter how you look at it, a Celtic knot tattoo is one that will be forever treasured and never regretted.

Drawing a Celtic Knot

Celtic knots are probably the best known of Celtic symbols. They are attractive symbols in themselves, and are often used today as borders and decorations on other works of art or design. They are also very popular today in tattoos, as well as jewelry.
The Celtic knot is a symbol of infinity, and of the many connections that exist between all things. One possible analogy in the world of symbolism would be to the magic carpet, as in Persia and other places where intricate carpets were (and still are woven. The weaving of a carpet has been used to symbolize layers of reality, and the magic or flying carpet could mean many things, such as astral or interdimensional travel.
Can you draw a Celtic knot? It is no simple matter for most people. The bad news is that I cannot teach you this; I have trouble drawing stick figures in fact. The good news is that this cool little video shows someone demonstrating the technique to drawing a Celtic knot in under 3 minutes! She also discusses the history of the Book of Kells, a medieval manuscript that contains many Celtic knots and other beautiful designs.

Thanks for visiting the Celtic Symbols blog! This site is inspired by the beauty and enduring popularity of Celtic symbols such as knotwork, zoomorphic images (those depicting animals, both real and imaginary, such as sea monsters and dragons) and other images. These images are very commonly seen today in many art books, in jewelry, as tattoos and fantasy art (paintings, book covers, CD covers, etc.).
Celtic art goes way back in history, and I’ll be exploring some of this fascinating tradition. There will also be links to other interesting sites and resources. I think Celtic symbols and artwork has such appeal, not only for its intrinsic beauty, but because it expresses something of the infinite, as in a Celtic knot. There is both a spirituality and earthiness to Celtic art.
I’d like to explore the many ways Celtic symbols have been used over the centuries, including languages. For example, one of the earliest Celtic languages was the Irish Tree Alphabet, known as Ogham. This, and other aspects of Celtic or Gaelic languages have also become very popular recently, especially in music.
